The New Smart Glass Solution for BlumSafe Display Doors

The New Smart Glass Solution for BlumSafe Display Doors

Special Offer for Owners of Older Model Display Door BlumSafes

A main reason people love our display door BlumSafe is because it allows them to admire their watch collection and other valuables behind the protection of the transparent, ½” polycarbonate display door. However, some customers express a caveat, saying they would prefer that their stuff not be transparently exposed ALL the time to housekeepers and others who might be around. Too tempting.
To help these customers hide their BlumSafes we offer our Electronic Screen, Magic Mirror and regular Mirror accessories. But for some people these solutions either do not fit their room design, are too expensive for their needs or they don’t mind having their safes visible in a dressing room or otherwise – they simply want a way to cover their display door window, sometimes.
Smart Glass
The “Smart Glass” Coating Solution. We are happy to announce a solution for these customers – the new Smart Glass coating option for our BlumSafe and Secure Display Cabinet. You may have seen solutions like this in hotels, conference rooms or other commercial spaces. Essentially, by flipping a switch inside the safe, at the touch of a button in an app on your smartphone, a verbal command to Amazon Alexa, or per a scheduled activity in the app, the near-clear polycarbonate window of our display door BlumSafes instantly transform into a white opaque surface, concealing the detail of what is behind it (Note: black or gray opaque surfaces are also available on a custom order basis – contact us). Give a second command and the window turns transparent again (note: transparency for Smart Glass solutions on the market is actually about 90% transparent – I didn’t notice it until I had a regular display door and this one side-by-side; likewise – they don’t go 100% opaque – you can still see hazy shapes through the window).
How does this film work? Essentially, the transparency state of your display door is changed by a very low electric current injected into a 1 mil thick (one thousandth of an inch) liquid crystal film coating on the back of the display door. When the power is off, the liquid crystal molecules scatter light, making the window opaque. When the electric current is applied, the liquid crystal molecules line up, allowing light to pass through and making the polycarbonate clear. Commands to change electrical state are sent over wifi or on the switch inside your safe (why inside your safe and not outside your safe?  To avoid access by the “wrong people”) . Note: Requires 2.4GHz WiFi network support. Most modern routers are dual channel, 2.4 and 5 GHz, and support this device.
BlumSafe Secure Display Cabinet

Benefits. Now when you leave for work in the morning, by your command (or scheduled activity) your display door will go opaque, protecting your valuables from prying eyes. Likewise, at your whim, the window can go transparent again, revealing your beautiful watches and jewelry, trophies and ribbons, rare coins on display, collector baseball cards,  Legos, your most cherished top shelf alcohol in your home bar, your early PDA/smartphone  collection,  Ball jars of better cannabis, really good fly fishing reels, your Hummel figurines (if you are into that) or any other cherished valuable (yes, these are examples provided by our customers of their display door use cases – it’s not just for watches).

This Smart Glass film also further improves the impact resistance to attack of the polycarbonate display door window. Polycarbonate is already 250 times  more shatter resistance to attack than glass (see this video for an independent example of what we mean – on a thinner polycarbonate than we use — and this video link shows our film’s protective impact  on a glass surface – not polycarbonate).

Availability and Pricing. We will be offering this Smart Glass option on all display door BlumSafes immediately, subject to limited capacity for the time being. The Smart Window option will initially add $685 to the cost of the BlumSafe, and $1,500 to the cost of the Secure Display Cabinet. Smart Glass-configured BlumSafes will also have, initially at no upcharge, our new, next generation keypad. In use by us for close to a year, this keypad has a MUCH improved fingerprint sensor, a backlit touch keypad, and  is significantly easier, more instinctive to program (see this video for programming and use). Besides allowing opening by fingerprint or keycode, this keypad also allows you to open it with an RFID card (included). I had been working on this keypad for close to a year, and when I finally introduced it to Elizabeth, our head of Customer Service, she was very, very happy.

For those of you who own the latest model “one window” display door BlumSafes, we hope to offer a smart glass retrofit solution in the next month or two – just contact us to let us know if you are interested. And if you have a US-built BlumSafe already and wish to upgrade to the new keypad, you can find it here.

Special Offer for Owners of the Older Model, Two Window Display Door BlumSafe.

Do you have an old, two window display door BlumSafe and you feel you are missing out on the last couple of significant improvements (like the single bigger window allowing full, unblocked interior visibility of all 12 winders, and this Smart Glass window solution)? We have a limited time offer for you. You can further reduce the overall cost of this new display door BlumSafe by reusing your old winders and drawers. And you will also receive our new, next generation keypad on this safe. Switching a new safe in for an older BlumSafe is easy — our new safes fit the wall hole of the older safes. So just unscrew your old safe from the wall, pull it out (be careful not to drop the winder electrical wire into the wall cavity!) and put the new safe in the cavity and bolt down. Contact support@blumsafe.com for the discount.

One Last Installation Note for the Smart Glass Option: The Smart Glass feature communicates to your app and draws power via a small controller box located outside the safe, which will require a small space for mounting that controller box in a cabinet, a nook or on a wall between your source of power and the safe. For a wall-mounted safe, you might consider mounting something concealable like this box or this in the wall beneath the safe or in a wall nearby – or you very well might already have a suitable solution in place.

We hope you enjoy the new Smart Glass feature and our new keypad.

Please let us know if you have other ideas or wishes for making BlumSafes better.

Thanks, Rob
