How to Protect Your Perpetual Calendar from a Power Outage to Your Winders

How to Protect Your Perpetual Calendar from a Power Outage to Your Winders

BlumSafe recently displayed at the WindUp Watch Fair in New York, and it was a fantastic event. We enjoyed meeting so many of you, answering your questions, showing you our latest products like the BlumSafe Professional Junior and the Travel Winder (a true impulse gift for watch collectotrs, at only $79), and getting some great feedback and product ideas from attendees.

And we received a number of questions regarding the feasibility of installing a BlumSafe in an apartment (definitely YES!), and requests for explanation of our free-standing secure storage options (i.e., the Secure Display Cabinet, either with or without display capability,  and the Concealment Cabinet). More on these subjects is coming up in future blog pieces – including more product announcements for watch lovers.

But first, one question that came up repeatedly was, “What happens when my electricity goes out and the winders stop winding?” Given the natural disasters we have experienced this season, the issue of lost power is high on many people’s minds. Even if you have a backup generator (as I do at home), those don’t always work as automatically as we were told, so let me share this simple solution  that I use for “backing up” my winders, which you should ALL consider. Most of us have our computers plugged into a small, relatively inexpensive uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). These backup power options come on instantly in case of power outage, and are often integrated into a surge protector/powerstrip arrangement, like this one from APC, which would give your winders enough backup power for months.

Just get a UPS solution, plug the winder adapter into it and then the UPS into the wall, and you should be able to sleep at night that no act of nature will stop your watches from winding. After all, the under $100 cost of the UPS is far cheaper than the cost and inconvenience of bringing your perpetual calendar back to the watchmaker to get your watch re-set! Or the afternoon you will consume trying to do it yourself!
